Decision Guide

WhatsApp QR or Cloud API? A Straight Answer.

One connects in two minutes and never charges per message. The other takes weeks, needs a commercial registration, and bills every reply from October 2026. We sell both, so here is the honest comparison.

The two ways to connect a WhatsApp number

Every WhatsApp automation platform, ours included, connects your number one of two ways. Vendors rarely explain the difference, because one of them makes them more money.

QR links your number as an additional device, the same mechanism as WhatsApp Web on a laptop. Your number stays on your phone, your history stays intact, and nothing is registered with Meta as a business asset.

The Cloud API is Meta's official product. The number is moved off the app into a WhatsApp Business Account under a verified company, and every message travels through Meta's billing.

They are not tiers of the same thing. They suit different businesses, and picking wrong costs either money or weeks.

Pick QR if

That covers most clinics, salons, travel agencies, restaurants and small stores across the Gulf, Egypt and Iraq. They live on inbound questions, and inbound questions are exactly what the API now meters.

Pick the Cloud API if

If you are a bank, an airline or a large retailer, this is not a real choice. Use the official API and budget for it. For everyone else it is worth doing the arithmetic before assuming official means better.

The option most people do not know about

Meta now supports coexistence: connecting the WhatsApp Business App already on your phone to the API without deleting it and without a new number. Your app keeps working, and automation runs on the same line.

It removes the worst part of the old API migration, which was surrendering the number. It does not remove the rest: you still need the business verification, and you still pay per message from October 2026.

You are not locked into one

Thikaa runs both from one inbox. The Professional plan includes 2 QR numbers and 5 Cloud API numbers. Start on QR today, add the official API when your paperwork clears, and your agents never learn a second tool.

What it costs either way

From October 1, 2026 the Cloud API bills service messages after the first 1,000 per number each month. In Saudi Arabia and the UAE that is $0.0157 per delivered message, with no volume discount. Marketing templates are $0.0576.

On QR there is no per-message fee at all. You pay the plan, and conversations are metered rather than messages, so a thread that takes twenty replies costs the same as one that takes two.

Replies per monthCloud API (Saudi)Thikaa QR (Professional)
5,000$62.80$29.99 + $0.33
20,000$298.30$29.99 + $1.33
60,000$926.30$29.99 + $4.00

The API is cheaper only at the very bottom, under about 2,800 replies a month. Above that the gap widens every month you grow.

Frequently asked

Is QR an unofficial workaround?

It uses WhatsApp's linked-devices feature, the same one behind WhatsApp Web and Desktop, which Meta has supported for years. It is not the Business API, and we never describe it as such.

Can I switch from QR to the Cloud API later?

Yes. Many customers start on QR and move once their registration is verified. On Thikaa both run under one account, so the switch does not change how your team works.

Do I lose my chat history on QR?

No. Your history stays on your phone. Inside Thikaa you see conversations from the moment you connect, and each thread fills in as customers write.

Can I use both at once?

Yes, and many do. A QR number for everyday support and an API number for campaigns is a common split.

Does the API give better delivery?

For ordinary replies, no. What it gives you is templates for proactive messaging, the verified badge, and a formal SLA at high volume.
